A plate of BBQ jackfruit sandwiches served with coleslaw.

When I first became a vegetarian, I didn’t like jackfruit. Like tofu, at the time, it seemed slimy and disgusting. Of course it had nothing to do with jackfruit or tofu; It was me. I didn’t know how to cook jackfruit or tofu, for that matter. But, as I have learned over time, I am now obsessed with both. And with all the obsession comes super-good food like this BBQ jackfruit recipe.

What is jackfruit?

Although usually available in cans, jackfruit is a high protein, high antioxidant fruit. Its smooth flavor perfect texture and blank slate absorb any marinade or seasoning. As a result, the neutral flavor of jackfruit allows me to transform it into slices of meat with different flavors.

Jackfruit has the texture of chicken! I didn’t say it tasted like chicken because, obviously, I don’t like chicken. But I love barbecue!

Making pulled BBQ jackfruit, however, satisfies my love for barbecued food! So, if you’re meal prepping, grab BBQ jackfruit to serve as a sandwich for the week, in a bowl, in a wrap or on top of a salad. Anyway, you like it; Barbecue jackfruit bomb!

Jackfruit is being prepared

When drained and removed from a can, jackfruit looks like chicken triangles. If you taste it, it’s tasteless, like it comes from a can. The smooth flavor of jackfruit makes it the perfect sponge for absorbing flavor.

For me, the fun is transforming jackfruit cans into incredible BBQ jackfruit that will fool any meat eater. But first, it is essential to buy the jackfruit in water or brine.

However, one of the biggest mistakes people make is buying jackfruit for syrup. Unfortunately, I made this mistake and threw away my entire meal. And I hate wasting food. So, avoid that pitfall and buy jackfruit in water or brine.

Then, wash the jackfruit, place it in your food processorAnd till the branches are cut.

While many recipes recommend using jackfruit as is, I beg to differ.

Instead, I prefer to cook it first. Like my Vegan Buffalo Chicken Dip, cooking the jackfruit first gives it a different texture and flavor.

For the right flavor and texture of the jackfruit, I aim for the jackfruit to absorb the flavors of the onion and BBQ sauce.

BBQ Grilling Ingredients

Believe it or not, bbq jackfruit has very few ingredients and is easy to make. All you need is:

  • jackfruit: Buy jackfruit in brine or water. It is usually found in the canned vegetable section of grocery stores.
  • White Onion: White onions are strong in flavor but sweeten when cooked.
  • Garlic: I like to use fresh garlic cloves for the best flavor.
  • Barbecue sauce: I make homemade BBQ sauce because I don’t like all the preservatives in bottled BBQ sauce.
  • Bun: I buy all my vegan, oil-free bread from a bakery in town, at the farmer’s market, or in the fresh bakery section of my local grocery store.

That’s it! So, in 15 minutes, you can eat delicious BBQ jackfruit sandwich!

Homemade BBQ Sauce Ingredients

I pour barbecue sauce into a measuring cup.

Since I love to make my own condiments, I make my own barbecue sauce whenever possible. Why should you make your own? Only you know what’s in your food by making it yourself, so I like to make it myself.

Of course, you can use your favorite BBQ sauce instead of making your own. But, if you’re interested in making your own, here’s what you need for a healthy barbecue sauce:

  • White Onion: White onions are strong in flavor but sweeten when cooked.
  • Garlic: I like to use fresh garlic cloves.
  • Organic Tomato Paste: I like POMI brand tomato paste which is made only from tomatoes with no added sugar or salt.
  • Tomato Sauce: I use POMI brand tomato sauce for the same reason.
  • Pure Maple Syrup: Maple syrup is used to sweeten the sauce without adding refined sugar.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar gives the sauce its tanginess.
  • Vegan Worcestershire Sauce: I love Annie’s Vegan Worcestershire Sauce.
  • Molasses: Jaggery adds another dimension of flavor. Jaggery boasts a very strong flavor.
  • Dijon Mustard: Dijon mustard adds a rich flavor.
  • Paprika: Paprika is the result, with a slightly sweet note and bright red color; It brightens a sauce.
  • Chilli: Chilli is used to add extra flavor.
  • Pepper: The cayenne pepper adds a mild flavor to the sauce without making it too spicy.

Substitute ingredients for homemade BBQ sauce

  • If you’re looking for a store-bought oil-free BBQ sauce, I sometimes use Simple Girl Organic BBQ Sauce. Also, I like the sugar-free one, but it’s a Carolina BBQ sauce flavor called Simple Girl Carolina Style BBQ Sauce.
  • Use yellow onion instead of white onion.
  • Substitute ketchup for tomato paste.
  • Try date syrup as a substitute for maple syrup.
  • White vinegar is an excellent alternative to apple cider vinegar.
  • Combine equal amounts of soy sauce, white vinegar, and ketchup for a vegan Worcestershire sauce alternative.
  • Stone-ground mustard is similar to Dijon mustard.
  • Smoked paprika gives the sauce a smoky flavor.
  • Red pepper flakes are similar to red pepper.

Again, if you’re looking for a shortcut to making your BBQ sauce, you must read the label to avoid oil and sugar while following a low-fat or sugar-free lifestyle.

How to cook barbecue jackfruit recipe

I'm frying onions and garlic in a pan on the stove.
  1. To get the right texture and dry out the jackfruit, cook it in stages and wait to add the BBQ sauce.
  2. Once the jackfruit is sliced, start frying the onion and garlic in a large non-stick pan.
  3. I use vegetable broth when cooking onions and garlic so they don’t get fried, but caramelize while cooking.
  4. Then, add the chopped jackfruit, and cook on medium-low, adding a little vegetable broth as it cooks until the jackfruit is wilted.
  5. Although it may sound wrong, you are adding vegetable broth and the jackfruit dries out as it cooks.
  6. The final step, of course, is adding the BBQ sauce. However, the amount of BBQ sauce you add depends on how much you want. We like it smoother, so I added more before serving.

Another bonus to this easy BBQ jackfruit recipe is that you can eat it immediately or make it ahead of time and reheat it when you want to eat it. Since I do meal prep, I cook it in advance, which allows the jackfruit flavor to penetrate deeper.
