Salmon patties have been in this family for a long time. Nannie always made them when Mom was growing up. Mama continued the tradition and made it for us when we were kids and to this day it remains one of our most desired dishes. Anne and I always want salmon cakes for our birthdays. So many people think they’re great. There’s something about a good old classic dish that warms my heart. I love it when a certain recipe holds memories and tradition, and this one certainly does.
For salmon patties you only need four simple ingredients:
Canned salmon, not drained
egg
Salt crackers, crushed
Cooking oil (I use canola oil) for cooking
WHAT TO SERVE WITH SALMON SPATIES:
We always have ours southern fried potatoes with salmon meatballs. Mom always made them like this growing up and we’ve carried on the tradition. Yet every time I post this recipe on Instagram, over half the comments are that their mom or grandmother always served them peas. So you might want to add ours creamed peas and potatoes to make a whole meal out of it. Don’t like peas? Add this popular one Pasta salad!
HOW TO PREPARE SALMON SPATIES:
Curious how easy this recipe is? It is SO simply! You just mix all the ingredients together, shape them into patties and fry them. Yes that’s it! This is a cheap, old-fashioned dish that requires little preparation. You can add onions and green peppers, and some people roll them in cornmeal, but my family only likes the recipe below.

What to do with leftovers
To be honest, I like the leftovers better. Place leftovers in the refrigerator, where they will keep for 3-4 days. I love them cold with mustard. We’ve never frozen them, but I assume they freeze well.
HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITE REVIEWS:
“Just the way my mom and I make them. I’ve tried a few more “fancy” recipes, but I hated them. I think simpler is better. Or maybe the food you grew up with always tastes better.” – Charlotte
“These salmon patties are different from the ones I grew up with, but they are MUCH better!!! “-Hope

Salmon Patties
I’ve been making these salmon patties for many years. This is my mom’s recipe and my family loves it.
- 1 15-ounce can salmon, undrained
- 1 egg
- 1 Pod with salt crackers crushed
- 3/4 Cup cooking oil I use rapeseed oil for cooking
-
Heat the oil in a large pan. Mix the remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients together with your hands and shape into patties.
-
Place the patties in the hot oil and sear on each side. Reduce the heat and continue cooking on low for about 20 minutes, turning frequently. Cook until the patties are brown and crispy.
You can add onions and green peppers and some people roll them in cornmeal but my family just likes them using the recipe posted above.
