Beef Tenderloin Kabobs are seasoned with classic Greek flavors like oregano, garlic and lemon juice to create these tender and juicy Souvlaki Greek Beef Kabobs.

Having grown up in West Michigan, one of my favorite traditions is to drive downtown to the Festival of Arts every June for a skewer of pork souvlaki fresh off the grill. Every bite is smoky, tender, juicy and delicious. But why wait until June? I decided to recreate the delicious dish (as best I could) with my Greek souvlaki beef skewers. A fairly easy meal with minimal cleanup as you can cook it all outside on the grill!
If you haven’t started grilling season yet, I’ll teach you a Michigan trick: your grill is your best friend. By providing the same direct heat as an outdoor grill, cooking meat under the grill is the easiest way to get the same smoky flavor from the grill, no matter how much snow is left on the ground.
Ingredients
- Beef Skewers: Ribeye steak, filet mignon, beef tenderloin and porterhouse are great for your beef skewers and can often be found ready-made in the supermarket!
- Olive oil: Heart-healthy and mild in flavor, oil helps marinate the meat with all the flavors of the other ingredients.
- red wine vinegar: Like most vinegars, it has a tart and tangy taste, but has smoky undertones that go great with this dish.
- lemon juice: Not only does it provide a light, tart flavor, but it also acts as a natural tenderizer for the beef.
- Garlic: Freshly grated garlic is hot and aromatic and becomes slightly sweeter when cooked on a skewer.
- Oregano: Dried oregano is a quick and easy way to add a slightly peppery, slightly sweet flavor to your beef.
- Mint: Dried mint mixed with oregano and garlic is a quick way to add a classic Greek flavor profile to your skewers.
- Kosher Salt: The larger crystals on the kosher salt ensure it adheres better to the beef and enhances the natural flavors!
- Chili Flakes: You can omit it if you’re not a fan of spices, but I love the little spiciness that the chili flakes add.
How to cook Greek souvlaki beef skewers

To prepare the marinade for your Greek Souvlaki Beef Skewers, take a large bowl and add your lemon juice.

Next add the red wine vinegar.

Followed by dried oregano and mint.

Then add the chili flakes to give the dish the needed spiciness.

Then add the fresh garlic cloves to the mixture using a micro-slicer or grater.

Stir in the olive oil until fully mixed.

Finally, season with kosher salt and some black pepper.

Place your souvlaki skewers in a large casserole dish. I like to add onions, green, yellow and red peppers, and tomatoes to my skewers for added flavor, but you can use any other veggie you like. Pour the souvlaki marinade over the skewers and let them marinate.

Let the souvlaki skewers marinate for at least 30 minutes, turning them about halfway. But if you have the time and foresight, the longer you let them marinate, the better.

To prepare your kabobs, preheat the grill to high and insert the skewers. Cook for 8-12 minutes (depending on how cooked you want it), turning about halfway through. Remove from the grill and let rest for 8 minutes.

Serve garnished with fresh spring onions or feta cheese and enjoy your Greek Souvlaki Beef Skewers!

Frequently asked Questions:
What is the difference between a kebab and a souvlaki?
Honestly, not much except where they’re from. Kebabs (or kabobs) originated in the Middle East while souvlaki originated in Greece.
Where can you buy beef skewers?
In the meat section of the supermarket they may be pre-packaged and already sliced for you. If you don’t see pre-cut beef skewers, take your favorite cut of meat to the butcher and ask them to cut the meat into 2-inch cubes. This saves you from cutting the beef at home.
What is traditional souvlaki made from?
Souvlaki can be pork, beef, chicken or even lamb! It is traditionally served on a skewer, but can also be served in pita bread or on top of a salad. When cooked or served on a skewer, it’s not the same as a gyros.
