Cuisines from around the world have produced some of the best pasta recipes, from classics like spaghetti bolognese and baked macaroni to linguine pasta. One of the most mentioned flavors is the crowd favorite of all ages – the humble, hearty Pinoy Carbonara. To put it simply, these are pasta with a wonderfully light, creamy sauce. And for this particular recipe, I’ve made cooking carbonara a lot easier using a few common ingredients and simple steps.

Philippine carbonara with ham and bacon

But as you may already know, in the Philippines it’s prepared with lots of cream to give it that distinctive creamy, delicious quality. But what some may not know is that the original Italian recipe doesn’t actually use cream. And it’s definitely easier in terms of ingredients needed. Let me show you what I mean when I compare these carbonara making styles.

Authentic vs Filipino Carbonara

Authentic carbonara

Starting with the original recipe, this dish really gets its creaminess just from eggs and cheese. Authentic carbonara doesn’t use many ingredients. We only use panceta to make our dish a bit more filling and meaty. As for the condiments, as mentioned earlier, we just have our cheese and eggs, plus some salt and ground black pepper. But for all its simplicity, it is definitely not lacking in wealth. This authentic version certainly deserves a lot of love as it is able to pack a great flavor with the few ingredients it contains.

Filipino style carbonara recipe

Now let’s move on to the kind you might be more familiar with: Filipino Style Carbonara Recipe! Plenty of all-purpose cream and a few other spices such as diced beef and nutmeg are used for this. Of course, this recipe wouldn’t be complete without the crispy bacon that contrasts perfectly with the smoothness of our pasta. If you haven’t tried this version yet, I would highly recommend you give it a try!

I would also like to introduce you to another way of preparing carbonara if you want to avoid meat. With this dish you can enjoy your pasta with seafood.

Festive Tuna Carbonara

My Festive Tuna Carbonara Recipe is vibrant in both presentation and flavor. There is a beautiful mix of toppings, from peppers to bacon to tuna. This great mix makes it perfect for the holidays as well as any celebration you are planning in the near future. And by “near future” I mean that you can get this up and running real quick. Cooking time for this is about 15 minutes since for the most part you’re just combining these ingredients. There is also something very special about the hearty and buttery taste of tuna. It really gives our pasta a beautiful texture and flavor that is not to be missed.

Now we can get back to making easy, delicious carbonara! Just follow the steps below.

How to cook carbonara

Pinoy Carbonara recipe

For this you need 300 grams of spaghetti. Now cook it as indicated on the packet instructions. Then drain the used water and set the spaghetti aside.

Grab a pan and let it get hot. Place 8 strips, cut into 1/2-inch slices, in the pan. Then just cook these until they are nice and crispy. Transfer this to a clean plate and set that aside as well.

In the same pan we melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Once melted, you can add 2 finely chopped garlic cloves. Sauté this for 10 seconds, then add 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms and 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour. Then just cook everything for 30 seconds while stirring.

Combine 1 68g package of Knorr Cream of Mushroom Soup and 3 cups of water. Give this a good stir and then pour the mixture into your pan. Continue to cook, stirring, until the sauce is as thick as you like.

Add ¼ cup grated parmesan. Also, sprinkle in as much ground black pepper as you like. Then you can turn off your heating. Start by tossing the pasta into the sauce, making sure the mixture is evenly distributed. Then you can simply arrange your dish on a serving plate of your choice. We’re just going to add our cooked bacon from earlier and some more parmesan cheese for topping. Then you are done!
