Hawaiian pizza is at the top of our favorite pizza list! Our chewy, homemade pizza crust is topped with a simple sauce, salty slices of ham and sweet chunks of fresh pineapple. The delicious combination of sweet and savory leaves no doubt that pineapple definitely belongs on pizza!
Why we love this Hawaiian pizza
Let’s just go ahead and address the elephant in the room. We know the concept of pineapples on pizza is very controversial. People really care about that and I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t have an opinion on it. We happen to be in the camp of people applauding the genius who ditched caution and boldly added pineapple to his pizza. Definitely not a classic Italian, but extremely tasty.
However, we know there are some of you who remain appalled. To them, in the words of Sam-I-Am, we say: you don’t like them. So you say. Try them! Try them! And you can! The salty Canadian bacon balances the sweetness of the fresh pineapple (omit the canned from the can here). And with the addition of sliced onions and olives, it really is a fabulous sweet, savory and salty pizza that deserves some credit.
If you have to, you can just (gasp!) omit it. Maybe serve the pineapple as a side dish. You still end up with a delicious pizza that is sure to make your eaters very, very happy.

What’s on a Hawaiian Pizza?
A traditional Hawaiian pizza is topped with Canadian bacon and pineapple. For our version you need:
- Pizza dough– Homemade pizza dough is delicious and so easy! Get our favorite recipe here.
- pizza sauce– You can use store-bought sauce, but our homemade pizza sauce is way better, simple as that!
- mozzarella cheese– We used freshly grated semi-skimmed mozzarella cheese.
- Canadian bacon– We used traditional Canadian bacon. Diced ham would also work.
- Fresh pineapple– Fresh pineapple tastes way better than canned pineapple!
- Red onion– Thinly sliced red onions add a delicious savory touch to the pizza.
- Black olives– Olives add a subtle salty, salty flavor that really balances out the other ingredients.

How to prepare Hawaiian pizza:
- Preheat the oven. The secret to a really good homemade pizza is a roaring hot oven! We like to bake our pizzas at 475 degrees F.
- Make the pizza dough. While the dough is rising, prepare your pizza sauce.
- Prepare the ingredients. Cut your pineapple into bite-sized pieces, grate the cheese, thinly slice the red onion and quarter the Canadian bacon.
- Put the topping on your pizza. Stretch the pizza dough to fit your pizza pan, about 35cm. Spread the dough with pizza sauce, then top with the cheese, followed by Canadian bacon, pineapple, olives, and sliced onions.
- Bake. Place the pizza pan in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Dig in!

Tips and Suggestions:
Bake in the super hot oven on the bottom rack.
This will give you a nice crust. Nobody likes a soggy pizza! If you use a pizza stone, you can also put it in the oven during preheating. GENTLY place your pizza dough on the hot pizza stone and cook as directed.
Avoid adding too many toppings.
Adding too many toppings to your pizza will make the pizza too heavy and result in a soggy crust.
Substitutions and Variations:
- Instead of Canadian bacon, try cooked bacon, crumbled sausage, diced ham, rotisserie chicken, or pepperoni.
- Use barbecue sauce as a base instead of pizza sauce.
- For some spiciness, add sliced fresh jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes.
- Add sliced peppers.
- Garnish with fresh basil or Italian seasonings after baking.
