This vegan tartar sauce is made in just 5 minutes with just 6 ingredients! It is perfect for vegetarian fish dishes and better than store bought.

I was looking for a sauce to serve my beer-battered vegan fish, and tartar sauce came to mind. I haven’t had it since becoming vegan and I didn’t know if I could find it at my local grocery store, so I made my own vegan tartar sauce recipe and let me tell you, it’s amazing!

It only requires 6 easy to find ingredients and all you have to do is mix in a small bowl until well combined. All your favorite recipes have a delicious sauce to enjoy in less than 5 minutes.

Note the ingredients

  • Can be vegetarian: I used my vegan mayo recipe, but store bought works really well too.
  • Sulfa Pickle: I like to use dal pickles, but any kind is fine.
  • onion: Any type of onion will do. If you don’t like it, you can omit this ingredient.
  • dried dill: Feel free to use fresh dill if you like.
  • lemon juice: Pickle juice is also a good option.
  • Ground pepper: The taste of fresh black pepper is amazing. However, I find store bought more convenient and easier to measure with teaspoons.

Pro tips

  • Chop onions and pickles very finely To get the best consistency. But it’s totally up to you, cut them depending on how chunky you want your sauce to be.
  • Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (ideally 2-3 hours) before serving for best taste.
  • For a lighter sauce with fewer caloriesYou can swap half the mayo for any non-dairy yogurt like soy yogurt or coconut yogurt.

Is tartar sauce vegan?

Classic tartar sauce is made with mayonnaise (which is not vegetarian) among other plant-based ingredients. However, to make it vegan you just need to use vegan mayo.

How can you save it?

Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. I haven’t tried freezing it myself, it’s a tricky ingredient to freeze as vegan mayo, but please let me know in the comments if you do successfully!

Can you make it soy-free?

Yes, you can use any soy-free vegan mayo, like my cashew vegan mayo, which is oil-free.
