Why We Love This Homemade Guacamole Recipe
Fresh, homemade guacamole is one of those recipes that everyone should have in their recipe arsenal. It’s healthy, easy to make, and spices up pretty much any meal. Our version features fresh tomatoes, cilantro, and lime juice…along with the perfect blend of spices.
The secret of a good guacamole is choosing the best avocados, fresh lime juice and spices. To tell if an avocado is ripe, look for a dark green/black avocado. It should be firm, but will give slightly if you hold it in your palm and gently squeeze. If it feels mushy or dents when pressed, it’s probably overripe. If your avocados aren’t quite done yet, leave them on the counter until they’re fully ripe. When ripe, keep them in the fridge to keep them at their peak maturity a little longer.

Ingredients for Homemade Guacamole:
- avocados– Make sure you use good, ripe avocados that give easily under pressure.
- tomatoes– We use Roma tomatoes.
- Lemons– You use the juice of 1 lime. Fresh is best, but bottled works in a pinch.
- Garlic– I prefer fresh garlic, but if using garlic powder, start with 1/4 teaspoon.
- coriander– Use as much or as little as you like. I usually end up using about 1/4 cup chopped.
- sea-salt– Start with about 1/2 teaspoon, then season to taste.
- onion powder
- Tony Chachere Spice– This is our secret ingredient! It adds great flavor but is completely optional.

How to Make Homemade Guacamole:
- Mash the avocados. Slice the avocados, deseed and remove from the shell. Blend until desired consistency is reached. We like ours on the chunky side.
- Add the aroma. Dice the tomatoes, finely chop the garlic and chop the coriander. Add it to the mashed avocados and stir gently to combine.
- Season to taste. Taste your guacamole and add more salt, lime juice and/or Tony Chacheres if desired.
- Serve and enjoy!

Tips & Suggestions
Substitutions:
- Add diced red onions or radishes for crunch
- Add cumin for a nice smoky flavor
- For guacamole with kick, add chopped jalapenos. For a mild heat, remove the seeds and membrane before dicing. Leave them in for a more intense heat
- Use orange juice instead of lime juice
- Make it sweet and savory by adding a diced mango
To store leftover guacamole:
Guacamole is best served the day it is made. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. To keep it green, press plastic wrap onto the guacamole. Or straighten it up in your storage container and carefully add about 1/4 inch of cold water. Just drain the water before serving.
Using frozen avocados:
If your avocados are perfectly ripe and you don’t want to use them yet, throw them in the freezer! Simply wash and dry, wrap in plastic wrap and place in a resealable freezer bag for 3-6 months. Frozen avocados are great for guacamole.
Ways to Enjoy Guacamole:
- As a spread or in a wrap with turkey escalope and vegetables
- Spread on toasted bread
- As a topping for veggie patties
- On fried potatoes
- As a filling for deviled eggs
- As a vegetable dip
- In a grilled cheese sandwich

- 1/2 teaspoon sea-salt
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

-
Taste and add more salt and lime juice if it seems like it needs a little more flavor. For best flavor, refrigerate for 1 hour or serve immediately.
