What is TEMPEH?
Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian dish usually made from fermented soybeans. I’ve tried tempeh made with other beans and even grains, but by far my favorite is still the traditional one made with soybeans.

Taste and texture wise, tempeh can be somewhat of an acquired taste as it has a nutty flavor and chewy texture.
Preparing and cooking tempeh can seem quite difficult at first but it is very easy to do with different ingredients and seasonings to make a delicious tempeh recipe.
Tempeh is very versatile and is a great nutrient-dense and protein-rich addition to your daily diet.
This is the way to enjoy maple hoisin tempeh
You can enjoy this tempeh if you want! I recommend enjoying it with rice or another grain of your choice, but you can also enjoy it with noodles, wraps, or with your salad. You can even double the sauce and include other vegetables for a delicious stir-fry!

Ingredients you will need for this recipe

For the tempeh
- 1 pack (1/2 pound) LightLife Original Tempeh
- Neutral oil for cooking
For the maple hoisin sauce/marinade
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2-4 tablespoons maple syrup (adjust to desired sweetness, (See Vaccination)
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon dark mushroom soy sauce, for color (optional)
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons Sriracha or other chili sauce, adjust to desired heat
For cooking and serving
- 1 tablespoon water, to deglaze the pan
- Green onions for garnish
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- steamed rice
Prep-Ahead Tip
You can make the marinade in advance and leave the chopped tempeh to marinate overnight. Next day pan-fry in an oiled pan over medium heat or until cooked and ready to enjoy.
Prepare your tempeh
- Lightlife’s tempeh is ready-to-cook and easy to prepare.
- Cut the tempeh in half and into smaller pieces, if desired.
- Heat a large skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add some oil to coat the pan. Once hot, add slabs or pieces of tempeh.
- Cook tempeh over medium-high heat until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.



Make the sauce/marinade
- Meanwhile, prepare the sauce or marinade by mixing everything in a bowl. Feel free to adjust the sauce to your taste.

Cooking Tempeh
- Pour the marinade or sauce over the tempeh and coat the tempeh evenly in the sauce.
- Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat. It will thicken and turn into a glaze from the sugars.
- Flip the tempeh and coat in the glaze to continue cooking in the sauce.
- When the tempeh sauce is soaked. You can deglaze the pan with some water.
- Turn off the heat and then transfer the tempeh into the plate. If you choose to cook them in square slabs, you can slice them into strips.

- Serve with rice or noodles. You can also enjoy tempeh in wraps or salads.
- Pour the remaining sauce/marinade over the tempeh.
- Garnish with green onion or sesame if desired. Enjoy hot.

Comment
fried
- Some hoisin sauces are mixed and sweetened like hoisin spices (look here) If this is the case, you can use less sugar or eliminate it completely.
- If using pure, saltier and thicker hoisin sauce than the condiment bottle for dipping, I recommend starting with 1 tablespoon and then adjusting from there. You may need to add more sugar to sweeten the sauce.
