Are there vegan options at Arby’s? Surprisingly, yes. Here’s what to order.

Vegan fast-food options have grown significantly over the past decade. Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are working with Burger King, McDonald’s and others. Completely vegan fast-food chains are expanding across the country. But, it’s still likely that you’ll consider ordering a quick, cheap meal from a chain where the animal-free choices aren’t obvious. Like Arby’s, a meat-centric chain from Ohio. As it turns out, Arby’s vegan options are pretty decent.

Are there vegan options at Arby’s?

Arby’s is best known for its meaty sandwiches, and while some fantastic plant-based deli meats exist, none of them are vegetarian. It’s not entirely surprising that a chain that once introduced a 100-percent meat-based sandwich with the slogan “Arby’s, we have the meats!” There won’t be much in the way of plant-based meats.

It seems as if the fast-food chain is actively resisting plant-based meat consumption, as are other fast-food chains. In 2019, after a rumor hit the web that Arby’s might add the Impossible Burger to its menu, former president Rob Lynch told the media, “It won’t happen on my watch.” Then the chain launched a fake marketing campaign about its new “meat-based vegetable” to show it was a hardcore anti-vegan restaurant. Don’t forget its 2015 “Vegetarian Hotline” number that promoted its new bacon.

But, despite all this, the chain actually has a surprising number of plant-based options.

Arabic has a lot of vegetarian-friendly, potato-based ingredients, and we’re not crazy about it. Pillow Crinkle Fries are free of all animal ingredients, so you can order without fear that the fries contain milk.

If you’re lucky, your location might carry Arby’s homestyle fries. These thick cut french fries are a regional item only, so your location may not carry them. But if they do, rest easy—they’re another style of fries on Arby’s menu that’s 100-percent vegan.

4 Apples and cherries turnover

For many, no meal is complete without dessert. Fortunately, you don’t have to skip all of Arabic’s sweets. Much like McDonald’s apple pie, Arby’s fruit pastries are “accidentally” vegan. Their flaky exteriors are made with vegetable shortening instead of butter. They are currently available in two flavors – apple and cherry – both of which are made with real fruit.

Some vegans avoid turnover because the shortening is made with palm oil, an ingredient linked to deforestation and habitat loss for many endangered species such as the orangutan. The decision ultimately rests with the individual.

5 Chopped side salad

Honestly, Arby’s Chopped Side Salad is a favorite. If you order it without cheese, you will have chopped green lettuce leaves and diced tomatoes. It’s not much, but at least it’s a way to add fresh vegetables to your order if that’s something you want.

Thankfully, both the balsamic vinaigrette dressing and the light Italian dressing are vegan. Plus, Arby’s has vegan bread that you can order on the side so you can get your carbs.

6 Vegan bread

Arby’s may be known for sandwiches, but there are no vegan sandwich options. In theory, you could choose one of the breads below and order it with lettuce, tomato, sauerkraut and other vegetables available at the restaurant, but it’s not exactly a substantial meal. Use the following types of bread to accompany your cheese-free chopped salad:

  • Cut the wheat bun
  • Marble Rye Bread
  • Mini good
  • Sourdough “Breakfast Bread”

  • Brewed Iced Tea
  • Coca Cola
  • Coca-Cola Zero Sugar
  • Coffee
  • Diet Coke
  • Diet Dr. Pepper

8 Vegan sauce

Food without sauce would be very boring. Arabic gets it and many of their sauces are vegetarian by default. Its signature sauce, Arby’s Sauce, is basically the chain’s version of barbecue sauce. It is made with tomato sauce, vinegar and spices.

Here’s the full list of vegan sauces at Arby’s:

  • Arabic’s sauce
  • Bronco Berry Sauce
  • ketchup
  • Marinara
  • Spicy Three Pepper Sauce

When you consider that Burger King, KFC, Del Taco, Taco Bell, Chipotle and many other fast-food chains have launched or experimented with vegan meat, Arby’s isn’t doing what it can with its vegan menu. In fact, its ad campaigns make it seem like the chain is actively dragging its feet. But when it comes down to it, Arby’s accidentally vegan options will do the job to keep you full enough until your next meal.
