There is a time for coffee shops, but even with mobile ordering capabilities, canned lattes bring a new meaning to coffee-to-go. Improved single-serve bottled varieties with La Colombe leading the way, swapping the bottle for a can and creating the world’s first draft latte. Other coffee companies have followed suit, and now have their choice of cold plant milk lattes for consumers to enjoy on the go (and avoid vegan milk surcharges at coffee shops). Here are 9 of our favorites. But first, what exactly is a latte and where does it come from?
Where did lattice come from?
According to Green Farm Cafe, like cappuccinos and macchiatos, lattes were originally invented in Italy. But they are not made for locals. They were actually created to cater to American tourists who “struggled with the bitter and rich taste of espresso.” So, it tracks how popular the drink is in the US. (Between June 2017 and 2018, Americans drank nearly 67 million lattes!)

But since the word latte translates directly to “milk” in Italian, you should be careful if you’re vacationing in the country, because you’ll likely be served warm milk. That said, in the UK or US, a latte is two shots of espresso topped with steamed milk and finished with a very thin froth. (A cappuccino is similar, but with much more froth.)
How can a latte be vegan?
Traditionally, lattes are made with cow’s milk. But it is not mandatory. Now, there are many plant-based milk alternatives on the market, such as oat, soy, coconut, and hemp, and all can be swapped directly with cow’s milk to make a vegan latte.
So, if you’re on the go and want a milky caffeine boost, here are a few vegan canned options on offer for you.
