5 restaurants to try this month: December 2022

Want to support local restaurants? Curious about new openings or unknown finds? Here are five restaurants I suggest you try this month!

1. Mehak Indian Kitchen & Bar

Mehak Indian Kitchen & Bar opened last fall in the northeast part of the city. Owner and chef Ravinder Sharma previously worked at the beloved Aab India, and now he and his family make a variety of North Indian dishes from scratch. “Mehak” means “aroma”, so every meal is a feast for the senses.

2. FIRE

Led by Argentinian chef Sebastian La Rocca, FYR in the new Hilton Tower downtown uses live-fire cooking, meaning cooking centered around a wood or charcoal grill, to create a fascinating menu. You’ll find everything from mushroom pizzas to salmon ceviche to Amish chicken with Oaxaca mole. Don’t miss the fantastic cocktails and wine list either.

3. The Peanut Shoppe

Okay, so maybe The Peanut Shoppe isn’t a full-on restaurant, but this long-running family store (open since 1936!) deserves attention. They just reopened after a hiatus and are still surrounded by construction. Look for the neon Planters Peanuts sign at High and State streets downtown, then look for nuts, candies, tins of chocolate and more.

5. Mjomii Dessert House

End the month with some dessert! Mjomii joined Bethel Road this fall, offering home-roasted coffee and made-to-scratch desserts. Pronounced “myoh-mee,” the cafe draws on East Asian and European inspirations for its menu of cakes and pastries. But the real specialty of the house: macarons!
