I never would have guessed that this list of fruits would reach 25, and some of them certainly have unusual names, but this short collection will surely help you with your pub quiz knowledge.

I look for fruits that are edible, whether they are large or small, exotic fruits, or the variety that you can easily find in the grocery store.

Some have seeds, some have stones, some are smooth, others have a unique shape – and here are some different fruit names I’ve never heard of before!

iboga

This plant has elongated drupes that are yellow-orange in color but don’t be fooled into eating them. It is said that this plant is used to induce hallucinations and near death experiences in Central Africa!

The scientific name is Tambu is grateful.

Icasin

This plant is native to several African countries including Cape Verde, Angola and Congo. The fruit looks like a hairless kiwi fruit and the inner pulp is pink.

The scientific name of the family is Icacinaceae.

Acacia fruit

Also called cocoplum, this beautiful purple fruit is small and round. They grow in Florida and the Bahamas, among other places, and are also used in traditional medicine.

The scientific name is Chrysobalanus Icako.

Ice apple is a fun little fruit from South Asia. Its outer shell is covered with a husk and inside is a clear jelly-like seed which is edible. It tastes sweet when ripe and is a good source of vitamins A and C.

The scientific name is Borassus flabellifer.

I chose to list it as a vegetable and it is actually a bean, but it has a sweet vanilla flavor and is referred to as ‘nature’s cotton candy’.

Ice plants are also known as fir-marigolds. They are classified as succulents and the flowers and leaves are edible. They have a bitter taste, so are perfect for making tart jams.

In South Africa they are also used for medicinal properties. The leaves are said to help with digestive problems and the juice has several uses.

Ichigo

Ok, so this is a bit of a cheat but Ichigo is actually the Japanese word for strawberry. You know this fruit is red and sweet. In Japan, ichigo mochi is a popular dessert.

Ilama fruit

This is definitely a fun-looking fruit. It is white and noble. Native to Central America, a favorite way to serve it is with cream and sugar with lime or lemon juice to bring out its tart flavor.

The scientific name is Annona macrophyllata.

Illawarra plum

Native to Australia, this fruit is often used in spices. Brown pine trees that bear fruit along roadsides and wood are often used in pairs.

The scientific name is Podocarpus elatus.

It is a plum-like fruit with smooth, thin skin. It is bright orange in color and is mainly used in Florida to make the drink. It has a sweet, but sour taste.

The scientific name is Garcinia livingstoni.

Inberry

Incaberry is also known as Peruvian groundcherry and is part of the nightshade family.

A foreign export, this fruit is used to make jams, chutneys and pie fillings, among others. Its outer husk makes it a decorative choice for use in restaurants.

This fruit is popular in the Pacific region including Madagascar and Seychelles. The skin of the fruit starts out bright green and turns dark red when ripe.

It is often eaten raw or cooked, although extracting the ‘nuts’ can be difficult.

Indian banyan fruits are round and orange in color on the outside. The tree is a strangler tree, so named because it chokes any tree around it.

The tree is said to be the largest in the world with an average girth of over 2000 feet!

Indian curry

Indian gooseberry is bright green in color and the plant is native to India and the Middle East. They are known to have several health benefits, including helping to lower cholesterol.

The scientific name is Phyllanthus emblica.

Indian hog plum

This fruit tree was introduced to the West Indies by the Portuguese in the 17th century. It is usually eaten fresh, or it can be made into juice, jelly and interestingly, sherbet!

Other parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine.

Indian jujube fruit

Also known as Indian plum, it is a tropical fruit that is green in color. It is a rich source of vitamin C and is commonly eaten raw, made into drinks or pickles.

The scientific name is Ziziphus mauritiana.

The Indian variety is one of the two main varieties of mango. do you know Mango trees can grow up to 100ft (30.5m) in height!

While the popular fruit can be eaten raw or made into smoothies, juices and purees, the tree’s wood is used to make things like ukuleles.

Also called Indian plum, this pinkish-red fruit is small and has a strange star-shaped stone in the middle. It is originally native to Southeast Asia and Polynesia.

The scientific name is Flacourtia ruckum.

Indian sherbet berries

This small blueberry-sized berry is popular in India for making a refreshing summer drink. It tastes like a tangy sherbet – yummy!

They are also said to help with digestive problems.

The scientific name is Grausia asiatica.

Also known as mock or false strawberry, this plant is used for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Its fruits are edible but are said to be less flavorful than true strawberries.

This fruit is classified as a pome and looks like a russet apple. It has a sweet and slightly tangy taste and the plant is native to South Asia.

Also called kaffir lime, the outer skin of this fruit is shaped like a brain!

Italian plums, or prunes, are sweet in flavor and have a dark blue-black color that is cloudy like the skin of a blueberry.

In cooking, they are popular for making jams and are used in sweets and cakes.

The appearance of this fruit is really interesting, it almost resembles a fir cone, but inside it there is an edible pulp and seeds. The tree prefers swampy areas in South America.
