17 Vegan Canadian Recipes • It doesn’t taste like chicken

Today I bring you 17 vegan Canadian recipes. Some of them are classic Canadian favorites that have been veganized, and other dishes are not classic, but “red and white”!

17 Vegan Canadian Recipes! Some of these recipes are classic Canadian favorites that have been veganized!

To make it easier, I’ve divided this recipe into two categories, savory and sweet. Scroll through these 17 vegan Canadian recipes and let me know which one is your favorite.

delicious

Vegan Poutine

Poutine is a dish that originated in Quebec. It’s made with french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy, and yes it’s as delicious as it sounds!

Vegan cream cheese

While cream cheese isn’t necessarily very Canadian, bagels are. Montreal bagels are famous! They’re handmade, cooked in a wood-fired oven, and smaller, chewier, and sweeter than New York-style bagels. Try one of my 3 flavors of cream cheese on your bagels, and you can also top them with everything bagel seasoning.

Vegan Tourtiere

Tourtiere is a traditional French Canadian meat pie, and I’ve made it all kinds of obsolete by making it vegetarian. Whoah! This vegan tourtiere features a drool-worthy chewy juicy meaty filling wrapped in a flaky pie crust.

Vegan Lobster

Lobsters and lobster rolls are very common dishes in Nova Scotia. Try my vegan lobster roll as is, or mix it with some vegan mayo, chopped celery and a squeeze of lemon and roll it up to make your own homemade vegan lobster roll.

Vegan Puff Pastry Wraps Bri

It’s not a traditional Canadian dish, but it’s “red and white” makes for a super cute app to share!

Vegan Split Pea Soup

Quebec-style pea soup. Try using yellow split peas in my recipe to make it more authentic.

Ginger beef

Ginger beef originated in Calgary, and is traditionally made with beef (duh). My veganized version is made with dried and then rehydrated shiitake mushrooms which have an amazing juicy chewy texture, similar to beef.

Vegan Caesar Cocktail

One of my all time favorite cocktails and perfect for the day after recovery. Similar to a Bloody Mary but a Caesar is traditionally made with clam juice. Try my vegan version which offers all the tang and none of the clams.

sweet

Vegan Nanaimo Bar

Walk into any bakery or bake sale in Canada and you’ll see Nanaimo Bars. Coconut chocolate base, with vanilla custard in the middle, topped with chocolate. Yum!

Vegan Butter Tarts

Another Canadian classic dessert. These tarts taste like pecan pie but better. Raisins are traditional (and I love them) but some people are anti-raisin in their butter tarts. You can go either way with this recipe!

Pancakes with real maple syrup

While pancakes may not be originally from Canada, maple syrup sure is. Make sure you use 100% real maple syrup, fake stuff won’t do!

Vegan donuts

Tim Hortons is a chain restaurant coffee and donut shop that you can find on every corner of Canada. Try my glazed donut witch has a similar flavor or you can turn this recipe into “Timbits” using a donut hole pan. Also, try my powdered donuts, double chocolate donuts, and classic glazed donuts.

Vegan Strawberry Cheesecake Popsicles

These popsicles aren’t traditional, but make a red and white Canadian-themed summer treat!

Vegan Red Velvet Cake

The red and white of this cake would make the perfect Canadian-themed treat! Make sure you use enough food coloring to make that cake really red (and not brown).

Vegan Strawberry Oat Bars

For me, it’s not summer in Ontario until I stop at a roadside stand to buy some fresh strawberries. Making these strawberry oat bars is one of my favorite ways to enjoy strawberries.

Vegan Sheet Pan Pancakes

Nothing says Canada quite like real maple syrup! If you’ve never tried making sheet pan pancakes, this is by far the easiest way to make a big batch of pancakes drizzled with maple syrup.

Vegan Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is something I make almost every summer. I don’t think it’s a traditional Canadian dish, but for me, it always reminds me of home, and red and white is perfectly Canadian.

I hope you enjoy these 17 vegan Canadian recipes!

Bon Appetigan!

Sam Turnbull.
